“The tree that gives shade does not ask who deserves to rest beneath it.” Anytime this Yoruba adage crossed my mind, I remember Qs. Theophilus Ayo Apere, FNIQS. As he celebrates his 51st birthday, I join family, friends and well-wishers in celebrating a man whose heart has always beaten for the good of his people.
For close to a decade now, our conversations have hardly been about personal gain or comfort. They have always centred on how to make life better for the people. On many occasions, he shared with me his desire to do more if given the opportunity to represent and promote the interests of the good.
When I read his People-First Agenda during his declaration to contest for Ifelodun/Oyun/Offa Federal House of Representatives seat, I saw more than a campaign document. I saw the thoughts of a man determined to rewrite the story of public service. I saw someone who genuinely wanted to put the people first. I saw a leader who believes that true leadership is not about standing above the people but standing with them. A man willing to lead from behind, allowing service, not self, to take the front seat.
I also saw a seasoned professional ready to bring his wealth of experience to help correct some of the things that have held our politics, public institutions and leadership back.
Although the outcome of the party primary went other way, one thing has remained unchanged—his passion for people. His commitment did not disappear with the election. Instead, it has continued to shine through his service to humanity. To me, that is the true measure of leadership. It is easy to serve when the title comes. It takes character to keep serving when it does not.
Through the Apere Family Foundation, countless lives have felt the touch of kindness, hope and opportunity.
Sir, thank you for staying true to your convictions and for showing that service to humanity does not begin or end with public office. Your consistency is inspiring, and your example reminds many of us that a good name is indeed better than riches.
As you mark your 51st birthday, I pray that God grants you long life, good health, greater wisdom and many more prosperous years. May the dreams in your heart for your people find fulfilment in God’s perfect time.
