The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has called on Nigerians to safeguard the nation’s democratic gains and continue supporting the reforms being implemented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for sustainable national development.
In a Democracy Day message made available to TheQuickPR by his Special Adviser on Media and Information Strategy, Abimbola Tooki, Yilwatda urged citizens to reflect on the significance of June 12 and recommit themselves to the ideals of unity, patriotism, good governance and national progress.
The APC National Chairman described June 12 as a historic date in Nigeria’s democratic journey, noting that it symbolises the sacrifices made by patriots who fought for justice, electoral integrity and the sovereignty of the Nigerian people.
According to him, Democracy Day goes beyond a public holiday and serves as a reminder of the collective struggle for freedom, representative governance and the right of citizens to determine the future of the country through democratic means.
Yilwatda said the annual observance offers Nigerians the opportunity to assess the nation’s democratic progress while strengthening their commitment to protecting institutions that uphold constitutional governance.
He noted that democracy has provided the country with a platform for peaceful political participation, accountability, protection of fundamental rights and greater citizen involvement in nation-building.
The APC chairman urged political leaders, civil society organisations, the media, religious bodies, youth groups and other stakeholders to promote dialogue, tolerance, respect for the rule of law and peaceful participation in the democratic process.
He also appealed to Nigerians to continue supporting President Tinubu’s economic and institutional reforms, describing them as necessary steps towards achieving long-term national prosperity.
Yilwatda stated that the Renewed Hope Agenda was designed to reposition Nigeria for sustainable economic growth, improved infrastructure, enhanced social welfare, increased investment opportunities and prosperity for future generations.
According to him, the administration’s reforms across key sectors are aimed at strengthening public institutions, creating jobs, improving the investment climate and building a more competitive and inclusive economy.
The APC National Chairman further urged Nigerians to remain hopeful, resilient and united, stressing that democracy can only flourish when citizens actively defend it through patriotism, responsibility and mutual respect.
He called on citizens to reject division, violence, misinformation and any actions capable of undermining the country’s democratic stability.
Yilwatda reaffirmed the commitment of the APC to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity and supporting policies that advance the progress and prosperity of Nigeria, while wishing Nigerians a peaceful and memorable Democracy Day celebration.
